A Hartford Drug House, Mattress, and Pay Phone #28

A week ago Hilda Munoz of the Hartford Courant brought us a story about the arrest of a Hartford man, Henry Hernandez, for allegedly operating a drug factory out of 184 1/2 Ward Street. Found along with 800 packets of Heroin in the drug factory were some cocaine, raw heroin, a stolen handgun and a submachine gun. Sounds like some good clean fun. We've been known to like to check these types of scenes out, and what we found was quite an interesting representation of our beloved city in the span of a few hundred feet.

Here is the actual house. A pretty standard duplex and from the outside, in better shape than many of the others in the neighborhood. The "No Loitering; Police Take Notice Sign" is notable on a house that was just busted for being a "drug factory." Not sure exactly if the 1/2 has a rear entrance.

The house next door is in good shape, appears to be vacant and is on the market.

Directly across the street is an old cemetery. Being such an old city, you often run run into old cemeteries smack in the middle of Hartford.

Just a couple hundred feet up the sidewalk we have Pay Phone #28 on the corner of Ward and Zion St. On our walk up the sidewalk to Pay Phone #28, we encountered and stepped around a discarded mattress, something we see a good deal of around town.

If we travel in the opposite direction towards Affleck Street, we find the Hartford Police Department Affleck Street Substation. Amazing this drug factory was operated literally a few hundred yards from a police station.

What an exciting field trip. That's a slice of urban living, all within a few hundred yards.
