Ed Sawyer: The Most Fascinating Man on Facebook

Without question, Ed Sawyer is our favorite Facebook friend. Jumper and Hakaan text/email each other roughly three times per day about Ed’s various status updates and adventures.

If you believe his status updates, Ed is an entrepreneur, social media guru, world traveler and philanthropist. He’s spent the past the past eight months wandering around Europe. We tried to do a story on him a few months back, but we ended up spiking due to legal reasons. We won’t go into the specifics, but it involved dismissal from a job as an English teach at a school in the Czech Republic.

In the past eighteen months that we have been following his feeds, Ed has started five companies (Sawyer and Associates, Sawyer Integrated Communications, Sawyer Executive Search, PlanToRecruit and Urban Globe-Hoppers) as well as one charitable organization (PlanToTeachOurKids.org). Check out his LinkedIn profile for his very impressive and complete CV.

Ed’s blog is also very interesting. Interesting in a “copy and paste other people’s articles into your own blog without syndication rights” kind of way. The original content is also pretty good. Our favorite was this post written by Urban Globe-Hoppers about PlanToTeachOurKids.org, which essentially equates to Ed Sawyer writing about Ed Sawyer.

Recently Ed got involved with the Nutmeg Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the charity event, Bowl For Kids Sake. Well, he didn’t really get “involved” as much as he set up a Facebook page that used their brand and solicited donations. That really PO’d Hartford’s Gen Y sweetheart, Julie Daly

Then things really got nutty.

Eventually Nutmeg Big Brothers/Big Sisters had Ed’s Facebook page pulled down. Less than 24 hours later, we got a friend request from “Bowling Kids Sake.”

Ed is now really angry – which is when he is usually his most entertaining. John Haymond should expect his phone to ring very soon.

We asked Ed directly to comment on the affair, but he declined. In an email to us, he stated:

“After much consideration with my staff, i'd rather an article appear that discusses the features and benefits of my businesses and organizations and how they benefit the greater hartford area.”

Regardless, it's good to hear that Ed's wild stallion spirit continue to march on. And yes, he even recently admitted to lying about something.

We’ll continue to follow this ongoing saga and let you know where it goes.

  1. So, Ed sets up a fake FB account for the Bowling for Kids Sake program and gets all snippy when it gets pulled by the organization that actually runs Bowling for Kids Sake?
Please keep us updated. I am F5ing this so hard right now.
Oh, did he "like" his own updates in the last two screenshots?

  2. Since when does Facebook let non-profits decide what pages are allowed to stay up or be taken down on their site? As someone who works on Facebook often and has had to try and appeal to them for help, I've never known Facebook to move quickly or decisively to do anything.

If his page was removed, I have to assume that there were multiple complaints over a length of time, and that his misappropriation was egregious enough that even a relatively slow-to-act third party with no stake in the matter could conclude his actions were unethical, or at the very least bizarre and misguided. I guess I'm kind of stunned that he thinks a free internet service owes him anything, especially the right to appeal their decision.

Either way, this whole petty back and forth he's having seems like a strange way to try and bring positive attention or "create social awareness through social media campaigns in the Greater Hartford community" for Bowl for Kids Sake.

How is this helping their image?

  3. Kids should not have "sake". Adults should not be bowling for kids to have sake.

  4. Why is everybody so self-righteous?
Also: No one over 27 is allowed to have a facebook. No exceptions.
