Mattress Colonies: A Solution Coming?
Discarded mattresses are quite a scourge on our fine city and Sad City has been covering the mattress problem for well over a year. In fact the fifth ever Sad City post was about mattresses on the sidewalks. Well in yet another stunning coincidence of City action following Sad City observations, Mayor Segarra released a statement yesterday stating Hartford collects 18,000 mattresses a year and further discussing the mattress problem in Hartford. The Mayor's statement courtesy of the City:
“Most Connecticut cities and towns are footing the bill for mattress disposal through taxes or by additional resident fees. This is not sustainable. I also believe it is not appropriate for our towns to incur disposal costs that manufacturers should absorb as part of the life cycle costs of this product”
“This cost cannot continue when our City has such a pressing need for these resources for other issues. I have always utilized an inclusive approach to finding solutions and this is no different. Therefore, I believe a producer responsibility approach makes sense. This session can be a vehicle for collaboration amongst towns, manufacturers, waste and recycling vendors to prepare mattress disposal legislation that meets the goals of all parties involved”
Nice. We love to see the Mayor mixing it up. This is a no-brainer great move. Brave. We have to guess it is only a matter of time before the Mayor announces a Hartford Pay Phone Museum.
Until then check out our story of why mattresses are so difficult to dispose of. Also check out our full archives of mattress posts here.
sex mattresses on top of sex mattresses -when will it ever end - people stop mashing it up on your mattresses and they will last longer. you all throw your mattresses out at the same time - grinding it up damn too many babies ares gonna die - if they topple over on them - rats be living in them - bed bugs - cockroaches -
ReplyDeleteThat's a typical Democrat at work. Legislate the corporations to death...guess what that means. Companies will increase the price of mattresses to offset the new legislation the second that gets passed. Brilliant.
ReplyDelete@anonymous #2 You'd rather have to continually pay taxes for mattress disposal than maybe have to pay a little more next time you buy a mattress? The only way I can make sense of this is if you're someone who buys a new mattress every month.
ReplyDeleteWe shouldn't have to pay ANYTHING for other peoples' irresponsible behavior. The last thing I want is another tax!
ReplyDeleteLeave the mattresses there as an eyesore to people who don't care about themselves or the neighborhood they live in.
There are 2 disgusting couches sitting next to the dumpster in the parking lot of my apt building that have been there for months. Idk who left them there but the garbage collectors won't take them, the landlord won't do anything about them, and no one including myself wants to pay to get rid of them so I'm going to be stuck with that eyesore until I move out.
