2012 continues to vex the once high flying Whale as the team remains win less in the new year. The week started with a 4-2 road loss in Portland before the Whale returned home to the XL Center for the weekend. Friday saw the Whale host the St. John's IceCaps in a game in which the IceCaps goalie Edward Pasquale made one of the best saves anyone will ever see robbing Kris Newbury of a sure goal. The amazing save proved to be huge as the game went to overtime where St. John's scored only 16 seconds into extra time.
Saturday the Norfolk Admirals came into town on Wade Redden bobble head night. It looked like another rough night for the Whale when Norfolk scored on their first shot of the game. The Whale then caught fire scoring three goals in seven minutes and chasing the Norfolk goalie from the game. At 3-1 early on, it looked like an easy win for the Whale, but the Admirals clawed their way back into the game, taking a 4-3 lead on a powerplay after a Whale penalty following the tying goal. The Whale quickly struck back to tie the game and for the second straight night the XL Center saw overtime.
After the five minute overtime, the Whale took an early lead in the shootout and the crowd was prepared to celebrate a long awaited victory. St. John's had other ideas as they tied the shootout and sent the contest to extra shots. Both goalies held there own, but finally the IceCaps scored and the Whale win less streak reached 9 games.
The Whale still hold first place in the division. but only 2 points separate first and fourth. The next game is Friday as the Whale are once again home on both Friday and Saturday this weekend. Check out Paul Doyle and The Hartford Courant's game coverage here.
