With its low self-esteem and high urban blight, Hartford is the ultimate underdog city. Sad City Hartford documents the joys, sorrows and eccentricities of New England's Rising Star.

The Joy Of

First we know; soda is really, really bad for you. Yet at the same time a nice cold Coca-Cola can taste really, really good. Sadly the older one gets, the more "bad for you" stuff has to be given up. Steak becomes chicken, salami becomes turkey, soda becomes unsweetened ice tea and cigarettes are just completely out the window. Yet living in Hartford, we have found a loophole to our no soda edict; the wonderful Mexican Coca-Cola.

It's well known that Coca-Cola tastes different throughout the world. Coca-Cola in Ireland and England is gross, while Coca-Cola in West Africa is very good. Thanks to a large Latino population in Hartford, one can easily find a Mexican Coca-Cola in our little city. We have taken advantage of the opportunity to try Mexican Coca-Cola many times and have found it is excellent. A cold soda always tastes better in an old fashioned style glass bottle. Somehow it seems justified breaking the no soda rule when we run into a Mexican Coke.

Ed. Note: Until about a decade ago we could get half liter bottles of Mountain Dew in rural areas of Vermont. Also pretty awesome. It's really a shame that it is so hard to get soda in glass bottles anymore. But you know the rule: profit over quality everything.

  1. Only way worth drinking soda is from a glass bottle! Plastic or metal change the flavor and the way you have to sip.

  4. You can find it at the stop and shop in the "ethnic" food section. At least I know Hartford and Wethersfield has it there.
