With its low self-esteem and high urban blight, Hartford is the ultimate underdog city. Sad City Hartford documents the joys, sorrows and eccentricities of New England's Rising Star.

Beyond Thunderdome: A Pro's View

Over the last year and a half or so we have explored the Hartford I-91 overpass a couple of times. First there was a solo journey on a hot summer day which ended with us being spooked by some sort of feral beast as we started to explore the underbelly of the overpass. The next time we visited the overpass we made a thorough investigation and ended up with some really cool pictures. That investigation lead to the a post about a Hartford Overpass Love Story, a post many have stated is the funniest post in the history of Sad City. Those posts piqued the interest of Robb Cyr, a professional photographer whose family had owned a house on McLean Street and he emailed us and asked about the location.

Beyond Thunderdome: The I-91 Overpass

Anyone who has drove I-91 has seen it; undoubtedly many have looked in wonderment at it.  The winding concrete structures connected by the caged walkway over Interstate 91 have surely bewildered many drivers over the years.  From the east the concrete rises from a walking area on the shores of the Connecticut River. From the west the concrete maze  rises from a desolate parking lot seemingly only used when Cirque du Soleil is in town. An empty concrete pedestrian walkway over I-91? Count Sad City in.

Spooked By A Highway Walking Path

This highway walking path has long intrigued us. The long winding concrete structure topped with a steel cage seems unneccassary to say the least. No one ever seems to be using it. The parking lot it leads to is almost always empty. It seems weird that it is so long and winding  instead of straight as if so many people would be using it, it needed to be stretched out. Imagine our excitement when we found the gate to the empty dirt lot unlocked.
