A Proposal on How to End an Era

The Hartford Courant is reporting that the City is very close to buying the property widely known as the "butt-ugly" building and that the city's redevelopment agency could soon start working towards a demolition. While our enthusiasm is curbed by the fact that we have heard these rumors before, this looks like it could actually happen. As we previously discussed, abandoned buildings are part of a problem for cities that invariably creates a quicksand of deterioration in an area. The decrepit building has been a part of the Hartford landscape for so long that in an almost Stockholm syndrome type way, part of us will be sad to see it go. If the building is acquired and demolition is scheduled to go ahead, then Sad City Hartford has a proposal. Make the demolition of this long time Hartford eyesore part of next years 4th of July celebration! Shoot some fireworks of the roof the building right before it is leveled. Give people a reason to celebrate some progress. This would be a positive event for Hartford residents signaling progress and would also bring some much needed positive media attention. So what do you say?
