A North End Mattress Colony

One of the Hartford phenomenons that occurs in the summer and that Sad City documents is the rise of various mattress colonies on Hartford's sidewalks. While the mattresses can be found throughout the city, occasionally we find a colony that can't be passed up and needs to be posted. This is one such colony.

One can't help but notice the contrast of a cream colored leather couch that appears to in good shape with the floral patterned love seat on top of it. It's as if someone cleaned out Hugh Hefner's smoking lounge and their grandmothers living room on the same day. With our familiarity of Hartford sidewalk "picking", we can only presume that this cream colored couch had not been on the sidewalk very long when this picture was shot.

Also note that while sidewalk mattresses are common, this particular colony contains the rare black truffle mattress. While a black truffle mushroom is a desirable mushroom, a mattress covered in black on city sidewalks is something to be avoided at all costs.

Finally astute Sad City readers will note the flat-faced Mt. Calvary Baptist Church on F.D. Oates Ave in the background. This church has been focused twice on the Hartford Houses Of Worship, but we have still yet to find anyone who knows who F.D. Oates was. Solve the mystery to win a Sad City prize (most likely a thank you and mention).
