With its low self-esteem and high urban blight, Hartford is the ultimate underdog city. Sad City Hartford documents the joys, sorrows and eccentricities of New England's Rising Star.

A Savior of My Own (Driving Around Hartford)

At Sad City Hartford, we spend a lot of time cruising around the city. This video attempts to capture the spirit of an afternoon drive through Hartford.

(EDITOR'S NOTE: An earlier version of this video was posted and then pulled down because it featured "People Get Ready" by The Impressions. While music rights forced us to re-cut the video, we actually think it works better with "A Savior of My Own" as the soundtrack. Enjoy!)

  1. Your video is getting me depressed, man. You start out at the Butt-Ugly Building, then go right to north Albany Ave., blighted storefronts, and some “Fast and Furious” wannabes getting pulled over. Hartford has a lot more to offer than that. Even more than Rent-A-Centers and the blind guy who’s always at the Half Door.

Next time, check out the soccer games that happen every Sunday on the field near the Northwest Boys & Girls Club off Granby Street. Get some footage of the farmers market on Broad Street at Billings Forge. For your yuppie fix, you could even drive by the jazz concerts at Elizabeth Park every Wednesday night. Hartford is a sad city, but happier than that video suggests.

  2. OK, Rob. I'll take your challenge. Give it a week or two, but I'll hit up some of your recommended spots. But be forewarned, yuppies listening to jazz music bums me out way more than any abandoned building ever could.

    Thanks for watching!
