With its low self-esteem and high urban blight, Hartford is the ultimate underdog city. Sad City Hartford documents the joys, sorrows and eccentricities of New England's Rising Star.

Park Street Snow Pile

Did anyone notice the gigantic snow pile that had built up over on the corner of Park Street and Main Street? The vacant lot had been one of the city's dumping locations for the snow that had been removed over the course of the winter. The snow is finally starting to melt. We caught up with some local residents to get their viewpoint on the situation.

While we agree with Jesse and Roger that the pile is a gross eye-sore, we don't necessarily see any better options. Do you remember how awful it was to drive around the city this past winter? If it wasn't for the removal of the snow from the streets, it would have been a whole lot worse. And when you remove snow, you need to dump it somewhere. It's better to see it go into a vacant lot than to see it dumped in the Connecticut River.

Would you care to bet on how long it will take for the snow pile to melt? Our friend Jesse set the over/under at June 21. We strongly suggest that you take the under.

  1. Jesse and Roger may be pleased to know that trashsnow piles and not the sole provenance of the Sad City.

We've got a bigger one at the UConn lot in West Hartford and a comparable one near the Bishop's Corner Library.

I view them as a mini geology/archeology project. And also good examples of while dumping in the River isn't such a good idea.

  2. Maybe if they dont like seeing trash, they would help clean it up. That's what residents that care about their city do. They help clean it up. To expect the city to do everything is pure laziness.. Your local govt doesn't make your community, the people do.

  4. Yes, it’s nasty, yes it attracts animals, and yes as it melts it leaves a gross pile of trash behind. But where did the trash come from? The residents that are complaining about this pile are probably some of the same people tossing the trash into the streets. This was not a result of the City dumping trash in this lot; it is a result of them dumping the snow from the sides of the street. STOP DUMPING IN THE STREET. Your problem will be solved. But, it is sooo much easier to sit on your but, do nothing and complain about the City or State not cleaning up for your mess.

  5. They've put up a nice fence at some point. The next step would be to wrap it with a semi-transparent banner that would block this disgusting sight.

  8. Jumper and Hakaan:

If this blog is any indication, you are the most adorable and delightful men in greater Hartford.

    Are either of you single?

  10. What else are you going to do with an empty lot? If this was a park, I would be angry but, an empty lot is more of an eyesore than putting it to use in service of the city. As for the trash, it's best to get wait another two weeks for the snow to melt completely for the city to clean it all up.
